Computing Acceptable Use Policy

The Criss Library's computing environment is an academic network promoting and providing educational and research opportunities for the students, faculty, and staff of the University. All persons utilizing these services are responsible for ensuring that computing resources are used in an ethical and lawful manner.

These services are made available with the Technology Fees paid by the students of the University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). They are, first and foremost, an extension of the academic environment of the University and Criss Library. Precedence will be given to students, faculty, and staff of the University while they are involved in academic pursuits. Any "surplus" capability will be freely shared. No use of the Library's systems should be contradictory to the goal of academic excellence of the students of UNO.

In addition to, and in support of, the policies laid out in Executive Memorandum No. 16: Policy for Responsible Use of University Computers and Information Systems, the following guidelines apply:

  • The Library's systems are not to be used for "hacking" or "cracking" regardless of whether or not it is considered research. The Library's public computer lab is not an appropriate place for this kind of research.
  • The Library's systems are not to be used for private commercial purposes.
  • Do not install software if you do not possess a valid license for it.
  • Be respectful of others, including those persons who may use the computer lab after you. Help us keep all equipment and furnishings in top condition.

Violations of the Library or University policies by library patrons, whether they are students, faculty, staff, or members of the general public, could result in the revocation of computer privilege.
