Getting Materials from UNO and other Libraries

A variety of options are available to distance education students for obtaining library materials (books, journal articles, etc.)

Journal Articles Full-Text Online

The library subscribes to several electronic indexes and databases that contain the full text of journal articles. Use Find Articles to search over 100 electronic databases. You will need to login with your last name and 8 digit NU ID number to access these resources. Please contact Linda Parker, Distance Education Coordinator via email or the Main Service Desk at 402.554.3206 or via email if you have problems with remote access.

Electronic Course Reserves

The Electronic Reserves (E-Reserves or ERes) may be used by your professors to make course materials accessible online. To access course materials available via E-Reserves, click here.

Other Library Materials

The Library's InterLibrary Loan department provides distance students with materials from Criss Library and other libraries (if the material is not available from Criss Library either a full-text database or the library's print collection).

Distance Education Students should use the ILLiad service to request materials from both the Criss Library's collections and from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan.

All users must register for an ILLiad account before submitting request for materials. It is important that you register as a distance education student to assure priority processing.

For materials available at Criss Library, books and pdf scans of journal articles are sent out within two business days, depending upon availability. Materials borrowed from other libraries will come to the Criss Library first before being sent to you. The turnaround time for articles is generally 2-3 days, but for books the delivery time for other print materials can be a minimum of two weeks. Please allow for extra time to receive those materials.

Books
Books will be sent to the student's address via UPS second day air. The Library will pay the cost for shipping the item to the distance student's home address, and the student will pay for the item to be returned to the Library. For more information on how long Criss Library materials may be checked out, see the Library's Main Service Policies. Books may be renewed using the "My Account" feature in the Library Catalog.

If a book requested is not available from Criss Library, we will borrow it from another library using Interlibrary Loan. Interlibrary Loan materials will take a bit longer to receive as we must receive the book from the lending library and then mail to you. Interlibrary loan books cannot be renewed in the library catalog. You must call the Interlibrary Loan office at 1-800-858-8648, ext. 4-3209 in order to renew the materials. Ability to renew the item depends on the policies of the library from which we borrowed the material.

Articles
Articles are scanned and posted to your ILLiad Account. Photocopies are made only by special request and have a charge of $.10 per page, which is billed to you. Rush fax service is available for an extra fee of $3.00 per article, however the scanning and posting to your ILLiad account can be done as quickly as a fax copy and incurs no additional charges.

In-Person Check-Out from the Library
Distance education students are welcome to check out library materials in person at the UNO Library. A valid picture NU ID (MavCard) is required. You may want to consult the Library Catalog to ensure item availability.

Getting Items Directly from other Nebraska Libraries

The library has reciprocal borrowing agreements with other academic libraries in Nebraska. These programs allow UNO faculty, staff and students to check out materials from other cooperating libraries. For more information on reciprocal borrowing procedures and a listing of Nebraska libraries participating in this borrowing agreement, see Reciporical Borrowing.

In addition, you may wish to check the catalogs of other libraries in the area for availability of items in their collections.
